County Opens New Volunteer Firefighter Station in Northeast Leon County

This week, Leon County Government will open the Bradfordville Volunteer Firefighter Station, the County’s newest fire station in northeast Leon County. Located at 13801 Hanna Hammock Road near the County Road 12 intersection on 1.54 acres of property offered at no cost by Tall Timbers Research, Inc., the new volunteer fire station will provide public safety services to the surrounding area, including the Meridian Hills subdivision and housing developments along County Road 12 west of Meridian Road.

“I am proud of the County’s creative thinking to partner  with Tall Timbers to bring critical fire services even closer to homes in northeast Leon County,” said Leon County District 4 Commissioner Brian Welch. “While we hope no one ever needs to call emergency services, the County’s investment in public safety infrastructure will help ensure fast response when it’s needed most.”

With completion of the volunteer fire station, the County may now make approximately 440 homes within five miles of the location eligible for insurance premium discounts. While individual policies may vary, insurance premiums of homes greater than five miles away from a responding fire station   higher on average.

“Working alongside the community and Tall Timbers to build the fire station is a win-win for all involved,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “With the new facility, the County increase support for fire service response, partners with Tall Timbers for controlled burns, and also helps area residents potentially save money on insurance premiums.”

The County’s Bradfordville Volunteer Fire Station joins five other geographically diverse volunteer fire department locations throughout unincorporated Leon County,  The new 1,000 square-foot facility will house a 2,500-gallon tanker and equipment. T he Bradfordville volunteer fire department will  continue to operate a 1,000-gallon tanker and equipment from the City of Tallahassee’s Fire Station 15.

“Volunteer fire stations throughout unincorporated Leon County provide critical support during all types of emergencies,” said Leon County Emergency Medical Services Chief Chad Abrams. “Our volunteer firefighters often live in the same communities they serve, and a new volunteer fire station helps store equipment and coordinate efforts.”

As part of the partnership, Tall Timbers will coordinate with the Bradfordville volunteer fire department on the conservatory’s annual controlled burns conducted for land management purposes.

The Bradfordville volunteer fire department has already begun moving equipment and settling into the new location.

"We have a long history of partnering with Tall Timbers to the benefit of each organization and the community,” said Bradfordville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Sean Ruane. “We look forward to strengthening the bond we've formed and, cooperatively, we will help make the most northern part of our County safer."
