Next County Library Lecture Focuses on Engaging Communities Through Active Design

Join Leon County Government, and the Center for Active Design, in partnership with the Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) and the Knight Foundation, for The Great Spaces Summit Library Lecture Series with Suzanne Nienaber on Thursday, October 22, at 5:30 p.m. This virtual, interactive, and informative workshop will connect health with design as Nienaber describes the role of the built environment in advancing health, happiness, and community pride.

Nienaber is an urban planner and facilitator striving to shape healthier, more engaged communities through her work with the Center for Active Design. Among other insights, her work reveals that well-maintained amenities, such as street trees, lighting and playground equipment, are associated with higher levels of civic trust.

As a part of the lecture, Nienaber will lead participants in interactive exercises to reimagine local public spaces within Tallahassee-Leon County. Participant insights on opportunities to enhance community spaces across the region will also inform KCCI's ongoing visioning efforts for the Market-District—contributing to a reimagined district incorporating a park, shaded walkways, and additional entertainment options to amplify the local dining and shopping experience.

Leon County selects speakers and topics that engage and inspire, appealing to the interests of all citizens. Following the lecture, the library will curate a list of related books and materials available for check-out. All lectures are free and open to the public.
