Leon County Takes National Travel and Tourism Week Events Online

This week, the Leon County Division of Tourism (Visit Tallahassee) will rally together (virtually, not physically) and engage the community in support of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), May 3-9, themed the Spirit of Travel. Celebrated annually the first full week in May, NTTW was created by Congress in 1983 to underscore the economic power of travel in the U.S. While COVID-19 is having an unprecedented impact on the travel industry, this year’s event arrives at an opportune moment to unite the industry, celebrate its indomitable spirit and elevate the role tourism will play in Leon County’s economic recovery.

Since in-person rallies and events that have been the hallmarks of NTTW are not an option, the Leon County Division of Tourism (Visit Tallahassee) is engaging with the industry and community through a series of virtual events and activities, including the launch of an online video to future visitors featuring local community leaders and industry partners, each sharing a message to keep Tallahassee in the minds of future travelers. Additionally, Greg Tish will feature Daily Tallahassee Tourism Trivia, each day on Real Talk 93.3, where listeners will be able to win Visit Tallahassee merchandise. To close the weeks celebration, Visit Tallahassee will host a live concert event with local singer songwriter Royce Lovett on Instagram, Friday, May 8, from Noon- 1 p.m. On social media, Visit Tallahassee is encouraging residents and past visitors to share their favorite Leon County tourism memories tagging @VisitTallahassee on Facebook or @Visit_Tally on Twitter and Instagram and using the #iHeartTally hashtag.

In 2019, area tourism saw another record-breaking year, including over $1 billion in economic impact, $7.2 million in tourist development tax collections and 2.4 million visitors to Tallahassee/Leon County. Tallahassee also recently earned a coveted spot in the Top 10 of Southern Living magazine’s South’s Best Cities for the second consecutive year as well as being named a Top 10 College Town for the first time ever. This global pandemic underscores the economic value of tourism and hospitality to national, state and local economies.
