Florida’s counties are 67 strong. Counties regularly work as one entity and speak with one voice to build a prosperous Florida with flourishing communities for our 21 million citizens. There are times, however, when individual counties work across the county line to assist another county in need. For example, several counties, including Lee, Monroe, and Walton sent staff to the devastated panhandle following Hurricane Michael to assist with recovery efforts.
FAC would like to start recognizing counties for going above and beyond not just in service to their citizens but in service to their fellow counties. We are pleased to announce that Leon County is the first recipient of the Counties Helping Counties recognition.
In 2019, Leon County, Florida conducted a comprehensive and immersive program for FAC staff on the nuances and business of running a county government. The program included four day long programs, explaining in depth the different facets of county government and the critical nature of the services provided.
While FAC serves counties, many of our staff have never worked with local governments before and few are knowledgeable on the intricacies of county government. The program meticulously designed by Leon County presented FAC staffers with the hands-on exposure to the different roles and requirements of local governments that they otherwise wouldn’t have received.
By helping FAC staff become better leaders, Leon County had a direct role in how the organization serves its members and its overall success. With the help of Leon County, FAC staff have gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of the work you do every day, and therefore, will be more informed and inspired when assisting counties across the state.
