Greetings from Leon County Parks and Recreation!

With the beginning of the new year upon us, it seemed no better time than now to update our users and community groups on the exciting things happening in Leon County Parks and Recreation. The projects listed below have either been recently completed or are in progress with anticipated completion or significant progress in the next 12 to 18 months. In addition, I encourage you to review the County’s 2019 Annual Report video which highlights all of the fantastic things the County achieved in the past year.

Leon County Parks and Recreation accomplishments and upcoming projects:

Orange Meridian Park A new community park opened at the corner of Orange Ave. and Meridian St. on September 20, 2019, providing a relaxing space for picnics and neighborhood gatherings and offering an assortment of books through the “Little Free Library.”

Leon County’s opened its first dog on November 1, 2019,  located adjacent to the Bradfordville Community Center (6808 Beech  Ridge Trail). The park features 13-acres of fenced, off-leash area for dogs  and their owners to co-mingle and play.  It is the largest dog park in  the Leon County-Tallahassee area and offers a unique, nature-based  experience for all patrons. Opening of the County's second dog park at J. Lee Vause Park (6024 Old Bainbridge Rd.) is scheduled for February 14, 2020. Stay tuned for more info!

Chaires Basketball A full reconstruction of the basketball courts at Daniel B. Chaires Park (4768 Chaires Cross Rd.) was completed on December 11,  2019, which included the installation of lights. This has  expanded the available hours of play for basketball enthusiasts  equal to that offered for our tennis patrons.

All boat landings have received new kiosks which include educational panels on how to access water quality information; you can also access information through the County’s new website: LeonCountyWater.org

Design and permitting continues on the second trailhead for St. Marks Headwaters Greenway. The trailhead is set to include a nature-based playground, restrooms, access to approximately 4 miles of trails and a small “bicycle playground” which helps new riders practice skills.

Canopy Oaks

Replacement of the concession stand and restrooms at Canopy Oaks Community Park (3250 Point View Dr.) is nearing completion and will provide for additional space for our Little League program.

Tennis court renovations at Canopy Oaks Community Park are scheduled to begin February 2020 ensuring quality facilities for users.
Construction of new amenities at Apalachee Regional Park (7550 Apalachee Pkwy.) to support cross-country events and use by daily patrons will begin in February. The new amenities will include restrooms, a presentations stage, finish line structure and operations building that bolster the ability to attract regional, state and national events to our community.  Construction of the County’s first nature-based playground at Okeeheepkee Prairie Park (1294 Fuller Rd.) is scheduled to open in May 2020. This playground is specifically designed to also accommodate children with developmental delays and will offer textures, sounds and colors conducive to their needs.

The permitting for the design and construction of new single track trails and signage at J. R. Alford Greenway (2500 Pedrick Rd.) is underway with completion of the project anticipated for early spring 2020. These new trails will offer an alternative user experience for Greenway patrons as part of the goals set by the Citizens Advisory Committee.

Crowder Landing renovations are scheduled to begin late March/early April 2020 to enhance the protection of Lake Jackson and improve the experience for accessing the lake.
