This week, six high school football teams from across the state will compete at Gene Cox Stadium in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 1A, 2A and 3A Football State Championships. Hosting the state championships will continue to drive local tourism and increase direct visitor spending in Leon County. This year's event is expected to draw more than 15,000 spectators to Leon County.
Founded in 1920, the FHSAA supervises and regulates interscholastic athletic programs for high school students at public, private and charter schools. The FHSAA sponsors over 3,600 championship series games through which 141 teams and 294 individuals are crowned state champions in 32 sports each year.
Hosted by the Leon County Division of Tourism (Visit Tallahassee) and Leon County Schools, this year’s championships will be held in multiple venues around the state with the 1A-3A State Championships in Leon County. It has been over 30 years since Leon County has hosted the State Football Championships. FHSAA selected Leon County due to County Tourism's past success in hosting championship events at Apalachee Regional Park, as well as the community's welcoming atmosphere and visitor attractions. In addition, FHSAA recognized significant improvements made by Leon County Schools to Gene Cox Stadium, which made it a premiere site to host the football championships. Media partners who attend will be given special access to the field and award presentations.
Media representatives must obtain credentials for the event by completing and submitting the Credential Request Form by Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, at 5 p.m. Click here to access the form.
