Get Hurricane Ready to Be Hurricane Strong

Educational Disaster Preparedness Event to be held on June 1

 

The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1. Residents should begin preparing now. To help, the City of Tallahassee, Leon County Government and community partners will host the fifth annual Build Your Bucket disaster preparedness expo on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center, 1800 Wahnish Way (on the campus of Florida A&M University).

This year’s Build Your Bucket will be a family-friendly expo. Dozens of community response groups will offer hands-on demonstrations, valuable information and interactive exhibits to help residents learn more about how to prepare, respond and recover in the event of a disaster. Attendees can visit exhibitors at their own pace to learn about these local resources. The first 800 households will receive a free disaster preparedness bucket and a checklist for assessing the supplies you already have and what you may need to purchase during the tax-free weekend.

June 1 falls within Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday week, which begins May 31. After attending the Build Your Bucket expo, families, armed with knowledge, can stock up on qualifying disaster preparedness supplies exempt from tax at local retailers. More information about the State’s tax holiday will be posted later this month at FloridaRevenue.com.

Attendees will enter via the center’s main entrance off Wahnish Way. Parking will be free in the lot behind the center near Bragg Memorial Stadium; the parking lot is accessible via Wahnish Way, Gamble Street, Okaloosa Street and Perry Street. Handicap parking spaces are available in the lot along the sidewalk adjacent to the center.
