2019-20 Florida High School Football State Championships Come to Tallahassee/Leon County

TALLAHASSEE, FL (04/04/19) Recently, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced that Tallahassee/Leon County and Daytona Beach will host the 2019-20 Florida High School Football State Championships from Dec. 5 - 7. Hosted at Gene Cox Stadium, Leon County will welcome football teams from classes 1A through 3A. Daytona Beach will host football teams from classes 4A through 8A. Hosting the state championships will continue to drive local tourism through direct visitor spending.

"Leon County continues to be a premiere destination for sports tourism and so much more, from outdoor adventure to arts and culture," said Leon County Commission Chairman Jimbo Jackson. "The thousands of visitors and players who attend the Florida High School Football State Championships will get just a taste of what makes us one of the South's best cities. We are humbly proud that we were chosen by the FHSAA to host the 2019-2020 1A-3A Championships in football."

Founded in 1920, the FHSAA supervises and regulates interscholastic athletic programs for high school students at public, private, and charter schools. The FHSAA sponsors over 3,600 championship series games through which 141 teams and 294 individuals are crowned state champions in 32 sports each year.

"For the first time since 1986, Leon County is proud to host the FHSAA football state championships," said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "Landing yet another sports championship is a credit to our hard-working County Tourism team and our many industry partners who work year-round to grow our destination and tourism economy. This event brings us even closer to reaching the County’s ambitious target of hosting 80 state, regional, or national sports championships by 2021.

FHSAA selected Leon County due to County Tourism's past success in hosting championship events at Apalachee Regional Park, as well as the community's welcoming atmosphere and visitor attractions. In addition, FHSAA recognized significant improvements made by Leon County Schools to Gene Cox Stadium, which made it a premiere site to host the football championships.

"We are thrilled to be able to host the highest level of high school competition in our newly refurbished, state-of-the-art Gene Cox Stadium. We wish all the teams best of luck and look forward to hosting a great state championship," said Leon County Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna.

All games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised on the High School Sports Network. For more information on the FHSAA, visit www.FHSAA.org .
