Leon County Intercepts Hazardous Waste Before Super Bowl Sunday

Electronics, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Announced

The Leon County Solid Waste Management Division announces the next monthly Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection, which will take place on Saturday, February 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Road. This event is one of many monthly activities in Leon County’s regular collection season, which will continue on the first Saturday of every month through May 2019.

Whether upgrading televisions for the big game or cleaning in preparation for a Super Bowl party, citizens may bring up to 50 pounds of hazardous waste, in addition to their electronics.

Citizens may bring up to 50 pounds of hazardous waste, in addition to their electronics. Some items accepted include:

  • Household items such as aerosols, nail polish and remover, hair color, spot remover, and fluorescent bulbs (limit of 25 fluorescent tubes per vehicle);
  • Cleaners such as oven and drain cleaners, floor-care products, ammonia, metal and furniture polish, bleach or rust remover;
  • Garage items such as motor oil, gasoline, fuel oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, paint, stains, mercury thermometers;
  • Batteries of all types including alkaline, rechargeable, watch and car batteries;
  • Electronics such as phones, printers and ink cartridges, computers, fax machines, CDs, VHS, cassettes and televisions (only one large-screen television per vehicle)

Propane tanks must weigh less than 40 pounds and there is a limit of one tire per participant. Medical sharps, medicines and radioactive waste cannot be accepted. The division cannot accept bulky wastes such as appliances (refrigerators, stoves/ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.), furniture, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, household garbage or Styrofoam. Due to limited space, loads over 50 pounds will be directed to the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center, 7550 Apalachee Parkway.

When discarded, many household products can pollute and pose a health risk, so the division holds these free events for County residents. Businesses and other agencies must call (850) 606-1816 to make an appointment, Monday through Friday, to drop off their items at the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center, 7550 Apalachee Parkway. Some fees will apply.

Additionally, citizens may visit the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center during normal business hours – Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
