At Annual Retreat, County to Discuss Building a Stronger

Community with Social Infrastructure

This year, Leon County’s annual retreat focuses on building a stronger community with social infrastructure, which is the spaces, places, and other local resources that foster relationships and promote interaction among diverse groups of citizens.

At the retreat, the first half of the day will feature nationally recognized sociologist and New York University (NYU) professor Dr. Eric Klinenberg, Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at NYU and author of the recently published book Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life.

Dr. Klinenberg will discuss how social infrastructure plays a vital role in the health and economic well-being of a community, including during disaster. His scholarly work has been published in journals including the American Sociological Review, Theory and Society, and Ethnography. He has also contributed to The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal and many other publications.

During the second half of the day, the Board of County Commissioners will receive an update on Leon County's progress towards reaching the organization’s bold goals and five-year targets in the areas of Economy, Environment, Quality of Life, and Governance. Following the update, the Board will review and update the Leon County FY2017-2021 Strategic Plan. The strategic plan provides a road map to guide Leon County's progress in setting the standard in public service and providing citizens and visitors alike unparalleled opportunities and experiences.

At last year’s retreat, Leon County discussed becoming the nation’s first #HurricaneStrong community in partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH). Subsequently, Leon County was named the first #HurricaneStrong community at the 2018 National Hurricane Conference, recognizing the County’s prototypical leading role in disaster resilience nationwide.
