Historic Smokey Hollow Barbershop Reopens in Cascades Park Monday, April 2

Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency invites you to the Grand Opening of the Smokey Hollow Barber Shop at the Smokey Hollow Commemoration in Cascades Park. The Grand Opening will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 2. As the only located, commercial structure that once stood in Smokey Hollow, the Barber Shop was moved from Smokey Hollow as part of the area's mid-century urban renewal program. With the help of former Smokey Hollow residents and partners in the community, Blueprint has brought about the restoration of the historic Barber Shop and its return home in Smokey Hollow.

The Grand Opening celebrates the homecoming of the Barber Shop back to Smokey Hollow along with its legacy and importance to the community.

“The restoration of this historic building ensures its continued legacy in the community where it belongs,” noted Mary Ann Lindley, Leon County Commissioner and Chairman of the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency. “Blueprint invests in our community by utilizing sales tax resources to complete projects like these, which soon become a source of pride for our citizens.”

“The Barber Shop at Smokey Hollow represents not only the preservation of a significant and important building in this community, but it celebrates the history and business acumen of African-Americans in Tallahassee,” said Vice-chair of the Intergovernmental Agency, Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson.

The Grand Opening ceremony will feature remarks from former residents of Smokey Hollow along with leaders from the City of Tallahassee, Leon County, and community, several songs performed by The Rolling Tones barbershop quartet from the Capital Chordsmen, a ribbon cutting for the building, and a commemorative haircut celebrating barbering in Smokey Hollow. Tours of the Barber Shop and a reception with light refreshments and checker games will follow the program.

Please join us Monday afternoon, April 2, for the celebration and festivities. The event will be held at the corner of Franklin Boulevard and E. Pensacola St. at the Barber Shop in the Smokey Hollow Commemoration at Cascades Park.
