Engaged and connected neighborhoods are an asset to our community. Tallahassee-Leon County is made up of vibrant, diverse and strong neighborhoods that are home to residents, neighborhood groups and businesses that are working to make our community stronger and more resilient. To honor the outstanding work that they have done to enhance the community during the past year, applications are currently being accepted for the 2018 Neighborhood Recognition Program. This program is a joint effort by the City of Tallahassee, Leon County Government, the Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA) and Sustainable Tallahassee.
“A Neighborhood of the Year award isn’t just about the size of your neighborhood or what side of town you live on,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox. “It’s about what neighbors do to work together, to help each other in times of need, and to make their community more resilient.”
Through the City and County, awards will be given to neighborhoods in two categories: Small - 200 or fewer homes and Large - more than 200 homes. The County will recognize a neighborhood in the Unincorporated Area (outside the city limits) category. Each organization will also present Neighbor of the Year to individuals who exemplify the characteristics of leadership and service in making contributions to his or her community.
“Every neighborhood is home to people who deeply care about their community,” Mayor Pro Tempore Curtis Richardson said. “From visiting with isolated neighbors to creating newsletters, these stalwarts invest in where they live with their time and talents. Neighbor of the Year is our chance to thank them for making Tallahassee a more connected, engaged city.”
Applications are now being accepted. To apply and be considered for the City and County awards, visit Talgov.com or LeonCountyFL.gov/NOTY.
To provide applicants with one-on-one technical assistance with the application, a workshop will be held on April 12 from 5-8 p.m. in the Myers Park Community Meeting Room, 912 Myers Park Drive. Neighborhood representatives can drop in at any time during the workshop. For more information, contact the City’s Neighborhood Affairs division at 891-8795.
A new component to the program this year is the Sustainable Neighborhood of the Year Award, which will be awarded by Sustainable Tallahassee. A wide variety of neighborhood efforts, such as tree plantings, litter clean up days, sharing information about composting, etc., will be considered by the judging panel. Apply at SustainableTallahassee.org/SustainableNeighborhood.
Based upon community nominations, CONA will once again name the Public Servant of the Year and Business Neighbor of the Year. To nominate individuals and businesses, send an email to Cona.Inc@gmail.com.
Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
Winners will be announced at the 38th Annual Awards Reception in June. More information about the awards reception will be shared closer to the event.
