Leon County Recognized for Outstanding Public Works Projects

Earlier this month, Leon County Government received three Project of the Year awards from the Big Bend Branch of American Public Works Association (APWA) recognizing outstanding public works projects. Each year, APWA spotlights special projects in the community that have achieved project goals within budget all while exceeding public expectations.

“These award-winning public works projects demonstrate that the Board of County Commissioners is committed to improving safety, protecting our community’s natural beauty, and investing in the future,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox.

This year, the following Leon County Government projects received awards:

• Lake Heritage Dam Improvements in the category of Emergency Construction/Repair. Restored function to the Lake Heritage outfall structures, which allows storm events to pass through the dam in a safe and controlled manner, while adhering to the Leon County code requirements for flood protection elevations. 

• Magnolia Drive Multi-Use Trail Phase 1 in the category of Multifunction. Constructed a 10 foot multi-use trail along the south side of Magnolia Drive. Due to the limited right-of-way and the availability of suitable area for stormwater mitigation, the design consultant, Atkins, Inc., designed an enclosed drainage system with exfiltration capabilities to meet all permitting requirements. 

• Robinson Road Flood Relief in the category of Environmental / Stormwater. Project was initiated for flood plain relief improvement and as a park. Repaired the existing pavement structure of Robinson Road, as it was failing due to the increased loading caused by construction. Leon County issued an emergency contract to investigate the cause of the catastrophic failure, and design a pavement structure that would handle the heavy loading that the road was experiencing.

"Earning distinguished awards like these speak to the County’s culture of dedicated public service and excellence.”

The APWA Awards Program promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who accomplished the projects together.

The American Public Works Association is a non-profit international, educational and professional association of public agencies, private companies, and individuals dedicated to improving the quality of life for the communities through public works projects and services.
