Resilience to Serve and Strengthen Our Community

This year, Leon County’s annual retreat focuses on building resilience to serve and strengthen our community as 2017 comes to an end, marking one of the nation’s most destructive and costly disaster seasons in history. And in the past two years, Leon County has answered the challenges of hurricanes Hermine and Irma, our community’s first hurricanes in 30 years.

At the retreat, the first half of the day will feature Leslie Chapman-Henderson, the president and chief executive officer of the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), the country’s leading consumer advocate for strengthening homes and safeguarding families from natural and manmade disasters. FLASH was founded in 1998 and brings together more than 100 diverse partners that share a vision of making America a more disaster-resilient nation.

Leslie will present on the lessons learned throughout 2017, a year that brought devastating hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding. Leslie has spent the past 19 years focused on building disaster-resilient communities through public speaking, shaping policy, and bringing together disaster safety thought leaders to leverage collaboration to increase public safety. Leslie has delivered keynote addresses for diverse audiences including Fortune 500 companies; academic institutions; national associations; and international conventions like the South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) in Austin, Texas; and the 2015 Aon Benfield Biennial Hazards Conference in Australia. In 2013, she addressed the United Nations as a panelist on World Habitat Day.

During the second half of the day, the Board of County Commissioners will receive an update on Leon County's progress towards reaching bold goals and five-year targets in the areas of Economy, Environment, Quality of Life, and Governance. Following the update, the Board will review and update the Leon County FY2017-2021 Strategic Plan. The strategic plan provides a road map to guide Leon County's progress in setting the standard in public service and providing citizens and visitors alike unparalleled opportunities and experiences.
