Leon County and Holland & Knight Honor Veteran with Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Award 

Leon County and Holland & Knight recently recognized Jack Pittman as the 2017 Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Award winner. Since 2013, Holland& Knight’s Tallahassee office and Leon County have given the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Service Award to honor local heroes. 

Jack Pittman’s a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Vietnam. Since 2014, Pittman has volunteered extensively with Big Bend Hospice to honor veterans, including his leadership of Valor Ceremonies for Big Bend Hospice patients. In addition to the award, Holland and Knight donated $1,000 to Big Bend Hospice to support the nonprofit’s vision of providing compassionate care to individuals with a life limiting illness. 

Five other finalists for the Glenn J. Winuk Humanitarian Award were considered because of their service to the community. Below is a short description of each and his or her accomplishments:

• Dennis Deckerhoff courageously searched for a woman who had drifted far into the Gulf on a paddle boat. It turned out she had lost her boat and had no life vest. After an hour, Mr. Deckerhoff brought her safely back to shore.
• Jackie Malone has served since 2000 as the Executive Director of Brehon Family Services. In 2016, under Jackie’s leadership, Brehon provided weekly in-home education and support to more than 1,000 individuals across the Big Bend and provided support services to 25 homeless, pregnant women and their families.
• Jonathan Mark Jeudy is a firefighter for the Quincy Fire Department. He has assisted in putting out numerous fires and works at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital as a life-saving EMT. He uses his talent as a DJ to support the Girls on the Run and has volunteered for Breast Cancer Awareness.
• Kirshner Saint-Charles is a firefighter for the Tallahassee Fire Department, and has contributed substantial time to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Boys and Girls Club, and as a mentor and football coach for students at Raa Middle School and Leon High School.
• Bill Schack has volunteered with many organizations including the American Cancer Society and the Special Olympics. Currently the Food Services Director at the Kearney Center, an emergency services center for the homeless, he helps prepare and serve 850 meals a day.

The fifth annual award honors acts of sacrificial service exemplified by Glenn J. Winuk’s life and his selfless sacrifice in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Winuk, a volunteer firefighter and EMT for almost 20 years, raced to help evacuate Holland& Knight’s New York City office, located just two blocks from the Twin Towers.
