2018 Spring Seed Library Kick-off

Join us at the Main Library on Saturday January 27 at 10 a.m. for the kickoff of our 2018 Spring Seed Library!  The Library and the County Extension Office have great things planned for all of our gardening patrons of all skill levels.  We'll have 10 varieties of vegetables and herbs for you to choose from as well as instruction and demonstrations to help you get a great start on your Spring garden. While the event will be at the Main Library, seeds will be available for checkout beginning at 10:00 am when all branches open.  Patrons can check out three seed packets per card a month until supplies run out.  The seeds typically fly off the shelves so get yours fast!

Harry Potter Book Night – Celebrate “Fantastic Beasts”

Calling wizards, squibs, and muggles of all ages to enjoy a celebration based on the Fantastic Beasts of J. K. Rowling’s wizard world at Harry Potter Book Night on Thursday, February 1, 2018! Participate in a photo op, scavenger hunt, games, and other activities while enjoying Butter Beer from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at all Library locations.  

2017 marked 20 years since the iconic Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published! Magical beasts across five continents are at the very heart of the Harry Potter stories. At Harry Potter Book Night, fans of all ages have the chance to celebrate J.K. Rowling’s wonderful series – and pass the magic on to young readers who haven’t yet discovered these unforgettable books.

Accelerated Reader (AR) and Lexile Books

Searching for Accelerated Reader (AR) or Lexile Books?  Our catalog offers easy access!

Find books on your student’s reading level by using the AR widget found on the Library’s catalog page at  www.LeonCountyLibrary.org, click on Catalog Search, then on “Accelerated Reader. 

Slide the bars to select your desired range of AR levels.  Click Search.  When your results are displayed, you may then narrow your search using the left side box to select

·         Location – Main or branch library

·         Shelf Location such as Picture books, Reader, Junior Non-Fiction, Junior Fiction, etc. 

·         AR point level

Books with Lexile Measures may also be searched by clicking Lexile and entering a Lexile measure between 10 to 2000.  Happy Reading!

Florida History Day Resources at the Library

The library offers resources to assist students who are creating Florida History Day projects. The Museum of Florida History sponsors this event annually with the goal of improving the teaching and learning of history in elementary and secondary schools. This year’s theme is conflict and compromise in history and the state-level contest will be held May 6-8 at Tallahassee Community College.

Developing a Florida History Day project can be a daunting task but the library’s resources provide support for creating successful projects. Library staff designed a webpage (tinyurl.com/FLhistoryday), book mark and infographic to guide the student researcher through selecting and narrowing a topic, evaluating sources and locating a variety of primary and secondary resources. The bookmark and infographic walk students through the research process, providing tips on evaluating search results and correctly citing sources. These bookmarks are available at your library’s reference desk.

The best resource when researching any project, of course, is your library staff and we are here to help you at every step of the process. Feel free to stop by the reference desk at your closest library location for assistance and we’ll get you on the right track to making a winning Florida History Day project. 

Branch Update

The Eastside Branch Library 

The Eastside Branch Library opened its doors on November 3, 2011 to serve the growing population of Leon County’s Buck Lake area.  It replaced the Parkway Outlet – a storefront location at the corner of Apalachee Parkway and Capital Circle Southeast.  The mission-style, 12,500 square foot structure was built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards – a rating system to encourage market transformation towards sustainable design – and was awarded the Silver Certificate.  With  “green” features like solar panels and sola tube lighting, there are many design features that make the building unique in the County. 

Also unique is the adjoining Pedrick Pond with its ¾ mile walking path and beautiful old oak trees. It has become the backdrop of many wedding, graduation, and other celebratory photographs.  The Eastside Branch boasts the only dedicated Teen Room in the County’s library system.  With a special design, it’s a great place for the after-school crowd to hang out.  It houses all the young adult fiction, graphic novels, magazines and monthly displays feature books of interest to local teens.  25 public access computers, two 15-minute computers, many study tables, and electrical outlets everywhere encourage patrons to come to the library for many reasons besides browsing the thousands of books, DVDs, and music CDs.  Many of the local homeowners’ associations as well as other community organizations utilize the library’s meeting room. 

The Eastside Branch Library is home to the Bucket List Book Club which began in February 2012.  It has grown so active that over 25 people attend every monthly meeting.  Discussions are led by members of the group and meetings are always open to the public. 

Many other weekly and monthly programs are offered at Eastside Branch for people of all ages and interests: Baby Time and Preschool Story Time, LEGO clubs, and the Teen Author’s Guild. Many more activities are offered during the eight-week Summer Reading Program. 

Ten dedicated staff members make the Eastside Branch an enjoyable library to visit and explore. Stepping into the Eastside Branch library building is like stepping into a Zen garden – with beauty inside and out. 

The Eastside Branch Library is located at 1583 Pedrick Road – just off of Mahan Drive - about 2.5 miles past WalMart and Costco.

"The Library Director called me at home on a Saturday to ask me to be a translator for the Haitian migrant workers who were involved in that bad bus crash in Wakulla County last year.  I said yes and went to meet them at the Red Cross where I helped comfort scared and hurting people.  My assistance was needed for several months until all the workers made it home."
