Leon County Honors Veterans on Memorial Day With Wreath Laying Ceremonies

In its commitment to recognizing and supporting veterans, Leon County will participate in several wreath laying ceremonies during Memorial Day weekend.

Leon County will lay wreaths at three formal ceremonies:

• Tallahassee National Cemetery, 5015 Apalachee Parkway on Sunday, May 28 at 3 p.m.
• American Legion Oakland Cemetery, 838 N. Bronough St. on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m.
• Veterans Foreign Wars Cemetery, Hwy 319 S. on Monday, May 29 at 10:30 a.m.

“Leon County has a long and proud history of serving the 19,000 veterans in our community, especially on Memorial Day when we honor those who gave their lives for our country,” said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey. “The Leon County Operation Thank You Commemorative Wreath program is a small act compared to the ultimate sacrifice countless brave men and women have made for our country.”

The County also will lay wreaths at five additional locations: the World War II Memorial in front of the Leon County Courthouse, the Korean War Memorial at Cascades Park, the Vietnam Memorial across from the Old Capitol, the Veterans Walk of Honor at the Capitol and the Big Bend Hospice Veterans Memorial Garden.

“At Leon County we are proud to serve our veterans year-round with job assistance, grant programs and benefit assistance,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “And this Memorial Day we will demonstrate our ongoing commitment by laying wreaths at many memorials across our County."

In 2015, as a part of Leon County’s Operation Thank You initiative to honor hometown heroes, the Leon County began the Operation Thank You Commemorative Wreath program to place wreaths on Memorial Day at various memorials and monuments in the community.
