Prepare to Weather the Storm
Family-Friendly Event to be Held on June 3

 

The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1. Residents are urged to begin preparing now. To help, the City of Tallahassee, Leon County Government and the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will host the annual Build Your Bucket event on Saturday, June 3. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pavilion at the Centre of Tallahassee, 2415 N. Monroe St.

Build Your Bucket will be a family-friendly event with demonstrations, information and exhibits. The first 500 households will receive a free disaster preparedness bucket and critical starter supplies.

After picking up a bucket, attendees will go from exhibitor to exhibitor to collect supplies and learn about local resources for surviving and recovering from any disaster. More than 20 community response groups will be on hand to provide valuable information and supplies.

Attendees can park in the lot outside of Music Alley (on the Monroe Street side of the property) and walk into the event. Response vehicles will be on display, and kids can interact with local first responders to learn about what they do during disasters.

This event is made possible in part thanks to generous donations from various community partners, including the City of Tallahassee, Leon County Government, the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and others.

A key element of surviving a disaster is having a plan. To give residents quick access to vital information, the annual disaster survival guide will be distributed in the newspaper on Sunday, June 4. Copies of the disaster guide will also be available at Leon County libraries and community centers, the American Red Cross and City community centers. It will also be available online at www.haveahurricaneplan.com and at the Build Your Bucket event on June 3.
