Leon County Recognized for Outstanding Public Works Projects
Earlier this month, Leon County Government received four Project of the Year awards recognizing outstanding public works projects. Each year, the American Public Works Association spotlights special projects in the community that have achieved project goals within budget all while exceeding public expectations.
“These award-wining public works projects really demonstrate that the Board of County Commissioners is committed to improving safety and protecting our community’s natural beauty,” said Leon County Commission Chairman John E. Dailey.
This year, the following Leon County Government projects received awards:
• Fred George Basin Greenway and Park in the category of Beautification. The 160 acre greenway and 10 acres of recreational amenities, located in northwest Leon County, included the infrastructure design to support the active recreational area and the passive trailhead area. It also included water quality enhancements, low impact development methods, and stormwater retention within the Fred George closed basin.
• Old Bainbridge and Pullen Road Intersection Improvements and Roundabout in the category of Transportation. To improve the intersection at Old Bainbridge Road and Pullen Road, Leon County constructed a roundabout with adjacent sidewalks, providing improved stormwater collection and conveyance, and installing a stormwater treatment facility to reduce impact to the environment.
• Lakeview Drive in the category of Environmental / Stormwater. To increase the capacity of stormwater conveyance under Lakeview Drive, the exising pipe culverts were replaced with a Concrete Box Culvert.
• Natural Bridge Road Bridge Replacement in the category of Structures Less Than $5 million. Natural Bridge Road Bridge was structurally deficient and was in need of replacement. Leon County developed a design that minimized environmental impacts and provided unique features to resemble a rustic timber bridge.
“At the County, our best public works projects involve teams of engineers, architects, contractors, and citizens,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. "Earning awards like these takes not only skill but a dedication to public service and professionalism."
The APWA Awards Program promotes excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who accomplished the projects together.
