Through Sculpture, Story Continues for Live Oak at Main Library

Leon County invites the community to celebrate the Live Oak Tree at the Main Library at a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m. Realizing that the live oak is as much a part of the library as the books themselves, Leon County memorialized portions of the live oak through sculpture by local sculptor, John Birch.

At the event, patrons will have an opportunity to learn about the concept and meaning behind each piece on the sculpture. Additionally, the newly landscaped area surrounding the memorialized live oak will serve as an outdoor reading space.

During the dedication, a special Story Time session will be held at the Live Oak tree. The classic children’s book, Goodnight Moon, which is carved into the tree, will be read aloud. Attendees will also receive a commemorative piece of the live oak tree to take home.

In January, the live oak, which was in poor health, was removed for public safety concerns. Over the past six months, library patrons have witnessed the live oak transform, seeing history being preserved through art.
