WHO: Leon County
WHAT: 2016 Fall Seed Library Launch
WHEN: Saturday, August 6 at 10:30 a.m.

“Fall” in love with Leon County’s 2016 Fall Seed Library launch on Saturday, August 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dr. B.L. Perry, Jr. Branch Library, 2817 S. Adams St. Seeds will be offered at all seven LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library locations while supplies last.

The kickoff event will feature experts from Leon County Cooperative Extension who will teach attendees about starting their own garden, harvesting produce, protecting plants from the cold, preparing delicious seasonal recipes, composting and recycling. Library patrons can also browse and select books and DVDs on gardening and cooking.

Library patrons can check out three seed packets per card a month from any county library while supplies last. Each packet contains 10 seeds. The seed varieties for fall 2016 are Lacinato Kale, Bloomsdale Spinach, Salad Bowl Loose Leaf Lettuce, Calabrese Broccoli, Selma Zesta Pole Snap Beans, Five Color Silverbeet Swiss Chard, Pink Beauty Radish, Atomic Red Carrots, and Cilantro.

The Seed Library program was started in early 2015 as a way to promote noninvasive, heirloom vegetable seed planting in Leon County, and to encourage Leon County residents to try growing their own nutritious food.
