Celebrating 25 Years at the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library
WHO: Leon County
WHAT: 25th Anniversary Celebration of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library
WHEN: Saturday, February 13, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
WHERE: Main Library, 200 West Park Ave.
25 years ago, Leon County Government opened the doors of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library, which continues to enrich the community today by inspiring a love of reading and a life of learning. Since 1991, over 14 million patrons have visited the County’s Main Library and checked out over 23 million items, which include books, magazines, movies and more.
To recognize the importance of County libraries, Leon County Government will host a daylong celebration in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library (200 West Park Ave.) on Saturday, February 13 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Leon County invites the community to enjoy an open house with behind the scene tours, displays of best-selling books from 1991 to 2015, memorabilia, a scavenger hunt for all ages, storytime reunion, a local author showcase and musical entertainment throughout the day. Patrons are also encouraged to come dressed as a storybook, movie or anime character and enjoy light refreshments.
The grand opening in February 1991 was spearheaded by Leon County in collaboration with the Friends of the Library and many other dedicated residents. For the past 10 years, the Friends of the Library have financially supported library projects that have built community interest, pride, and financial support for local Library programs.
The Spring 2016 Seed Library will also be launched on February 13 and will include a live cooking demonstration. The launch will also feature experts from Leon County Cooperative Extension, who will teach attendees about starting their own garden, harvesting produce and preparing delicious seasonal recipes.
Also, portions of the venerable live oak at the downtown LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library will be memorialized on February 13 by local sculptor John Birch. Sections of the live oak tree will be carved to commemorate and reflect the history it has witnessed. A live sculpting demonstration will be performed for the public throughout the day on Saturday.
In addition to the daylong celebration on February 13, presented by Leon County Government, The Friends of the Library will host a fundraising gala celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Library. The event will take place on Friday, February 12, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the LeRoy Collins Main Library. Ticket prices are $75.
