Description of Duties:   This is a full time employment position that is eligible for all career service state employee benefits.  The person in this position: Serves as Assistant Regional Biologist in the  Wildlife Diversity Conservation Section for the North Central Region. Works with the Regional Biologist to develop and conduct population survey and monitoring projects, management projects, and other conservation activities for state listed and other important non-game wildlife species across the region. Conducts management actions on important wildlife areas including activities protecting designated Critical Wildlife Areas. Works collaboratively with other agency staff members to assist with planning processes and address management issues. Represents FWC in work with other agencies and organizations.  Serves as back-up to the Regional Biologist for regional issues when necessary.  Reviews permit applications that are received and writes biological opinions regarding impacts of proposed activities on listed species. Assists with preparing proposals for grants to fund priority conservation projects. Works to develop or enhance partnerships with other organizations to improve wildlife conservation.  Provides technical assistance to the public and other agencies regarding conservation of non-game wildlife.  Inputs or manages data, maintains equipment, and provides other administrative support for regional activities as necessary.

Residency Requirement:  None

Level of Education:   B.S. degree in the biological sciences. Prefer: M.S. degree in the biological sciences and 1 year of professional biological experience; organizational experience; experience using MS Office and ArcGIS. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

A bachelor's degree with a major in one of the biological sciences. A degree in wildlife, ecology, natural resources, or similar discipline is preferred. A graduate degree and 1 year of professional experience working on the ecology, conservation, or management of vertebrate or other non-game wildlife species is preferred.  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Skilled in the use of computers for communications and information/data management.  Ability to work well with minimal supervision.  Able to conduct moderately strenuous wildlife management and monitoring activities outdoors during the summer and other sometimes harsh conditions.

 It is preferred that applicants have: Experience using ArcGIS; Knowledge of important nongame wildlife species in north central Florida; Experience developing wildlife survey and management projects; An understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, and policies; Good organizational (time management, office organization, information management), customer service, and problem solving skills;  Demonstrated experience providing technical assistance and customer service to the public; Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working partnerships with other conservation agencies; and Ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including GPS units, hand tools, 4WD vehicles, ATVs, trailers, and boats up to 18 feet, along with an understanding of basic maintenance requirements for such equipment.  The successful applicant will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and have a commitment to natural resource conservation and customer service.
