Open Competitive Opportunity 

This is an OPS grant-funded technical position, located in St. Petersburg, which supports Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) scientists within the Fisheries Dependent Monitoring subsection. The applicant selected for this position will assist in providing database management to both the commercial and recreational fishery programs. The position will be responsible for the maintenance, quality assurance and quality control of the program datasets. The applicant selected for this position will be needed to communicate with both staff within the Fisheries Dependent Monitoring subsection and other staff within the Institute and agency. The job duties are as follows:

  • Maintain and develop relational databases;
  • Create and manage new data reporting applications;
  • Create and maintain code to streamline and automate data management tasks;
  • Develop routines to assess data accuracy and perform quality control checks. 

Minimum requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and two years of experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or two years of experience as a Research Assistant - FWC or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for one year of the required experience or
  • A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for the required experience. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expertise with relational database management systems, especially SQL;
  • Experience writing transactional queries, stored procedures, and functions within a database management system;
  • Experience synthesizing and summarizing data for data requests;
  • Experience with SAS or similar statistical software;
  • Proficient in one or more scripting languages;
  • Familiarity with computer programming concepts;
  • Ability to write clean, well-documented code;
  • Ability to find and fix any errors in programs, systems and software;
  • Track record of successful coding development;
  • Develop and deploy computer applications;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to articulate technical information to colleagues and prepare technical documentation;
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills 

Preferred Experience:

Preference may be given to candidates demonstrating:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Visual Studio;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio;
  • Background in fisheries management;
  • Familiarity with fishery indices;
  • Quantitative analytical skills;
  • Advanced training or coursework in a related discipline;
  • Or having a background or education in computer science, or degree in wildlife or fisheries science or discipline closely related to the duties and responsibilities of this position.
