Description of responsibilities and duties: 

This leadership position serves as the Species Conservation Planning Section's Assistant Section Leader and Protected Species Coordination Subsection Leader. 

 

As Assistant Section Leader, this position is responsible for assisting the Section Leader with all aspects of leading, supervising, and overseeing the operations of the Species Conservation Planning Section.  As Protected Species Coordination Subsection Leader, the position is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Imperiled Species Management Plan (ISMP), wildlife permitting, incentive-based conservation, and federal coordination issues.   Specific duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the Section Leader in addressing policy and operational issues assigned to the section; serving as the Acting Section Leader when so required; preparing, coordinating, and administering the section's annual budget; supervising and mentoring section leads working on ISMP implementation, wildlife permitting, incentive-based conservation, and federal coordination issues; working with other subsections, sections, and divisions/offices on issues assigned to or of interest to the section; working with partners and stakeholders to address and resolve issues; and serving on teams, both internal and external to the agency, addressing various issues.

Qualifications: This is not an entry level position. Strong interpersonal skills are required to lead, supervise and mentor employees, and to work with partners and stakeholders.  Strong administrative, organizational, and budget management skills are required to manage multiple projects, staffs, and budgets.  A solid foundation of conservation biology or wildlife management in Florida and the motivation, initiative, and proclivity to quickly develop and apply the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed in this JOA are required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Knowledge of Florida’s fish and wildlife, particularly state and federally listed species; Florida habitats; conservation biology or wildlife management in Florida; listed species permitting; the Federal Endangered Species Act and the state Rules Relating to Endangered or Threatened Species and other applicable federal and state laws, rules, and policies; habitat management practices that benefit terrestrial wildlife.

 

Skill in writing, including emails; problem solving; planning and prioritizing work assignments; multitasking; establishing and meeting deadlines; time management; preparing and delivering presentations to small and large audiences; leading or facilitating meetings; the use of Microsoft Office software, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Google Earth or ArcGIS.

 

Ability to understand and apply applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; supervise professional staff; to efficiently organize information and details; to manage multiple projects; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to work effectively with other agency staff members, partners, and stakeholders to achieve desired results; to work independently with minimal supervision; problem-solve and handle conflict with professionalism; to safely operate vehicles; and to travel overnight, sometimes out of state; to assess employee work performance and provide feedback; prepare correspondence and administrative reports; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Residency Requirement:  None

Level of Education: Minimum of a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences and six years of professional biological experience; or a master's degree in the biological sciences and four years of professional experience as described above; or a Ph.D. in the biological sciences and two years of professional experience as described above. At least a Master’s degree in wildlife science, natural resource management, ecology, or similar is preferred.
