The Gopher Tortoise Council has officially adopted April 10 as Gopher Tortoise Day, and now you can too!

Gopher Tortoise Day is quickly approaching and there is still work to be done! Gopher Tortoises are considered a keystone species because they dig burrows that provide shelter for more than 360 documented species of wildlife, called "commensals". Without the gopher tortoise, many of these species would not exist.

Help raise awareness for the gopher tortoise and commensals by adopting April 10 as Gopher Tortoise Day in your community. This can be done by contacting your city or county commission to gain the support needed to adopt a resolution. Once the resolution has been added to the commission agenda, your local government can officially declare April 10 as Gopher Tortoise Day!

A resolution template can be found on the Gopher Tortoise Day website, which can be customized for your local government. A sample press release and social media post are also included on the resolution webpage. You can use the information included to brag about adopting April 10 as Gopher Tortoise Day in your community, to advertise events, or to urge others to help out with the conservation of this important keystone species!
