DESCRIPTION
The Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI), the research arm of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), invites applications for a Veterinarian II in the Fish and Wildlife Health subsection, who will function as part of an integrated Florida panther management and research team.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Panther biomedical management
The incumbent will be responsible for veterinary and biomedical components of the Florida Panther Recovery Program, including: assisting with the design and implementation of approved panther biomedical studies; participating in and making medical and anesthetic decisions associated with the capture and immobilization of panthers; processing, analyzing, and preserving biological samples from panthers; conducting post-mortem examinations of panthers; acting as a liaison for veterinary issues with other entities cooperating with the FWC in panther activities; providing emergency immobilization and treatment training and equipment to biologists and others responding to panther emergencies; assisting with the placement and oversight of captive panthers; and preparing reports and manuscripts.
Panther management
The incumbent will participate in investigations of human-panther interactions or suspected panther depredations; provide panther information to constituents, FWC personnel, other State, Federal and local agencies; and work with Community Relations staff to produce news releases, social media, and web content.
Panther Research
The incumbent will assist with monitoring panther prey health, investigating mortality events, and assisting with disease surveillance in prey species; track radio collared Florida panthers from the ground and fixed-winged aircraft using radio telemetry techniques; and assist with panther research projects as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be licensed or be eligible for licensure as a Veterinarian by the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 474 and must be eligible for DEA licensure. A strong background in terrestrial wildlife ecology and diseases with a degree in one of the physical or natural sciences and one years’ experience in veterinary medicine and/or wildlife ecology is required. A graduate degree in wildlife ecology or related field may substitute for experience.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
Knowledge of: management principles and practices; principles, techniques and equipment used in veterinary medicine; principles and techniques of wildlife capture, immobilization, and anesthesia; principles and techniques of bacteriology, virology, microbiology, parasitology, clinical pathology; veterinary diagnostic principles and techniques; animal diseases, their symptoms and treatment; animal anatomy, physiology and pathology; and management principles and practices; principles, techniques and equipment used in field wildlife ecology. Skill in: the use of veterinary laboratory instruments and equipment; immobilization equipment; and radio-telemetry. Ability to: determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; conduct, analyze and interpret veterinary diagnostic tests; work independently; solve problems and make decisions; and understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to veterinary medicine. Additional KSAs needed include: Skilled in radio telemetry techniques from ground and fixed-winged aircraft. Knowledge of orienteering skills and ability to navigate through the field utilizing maps, compass, and GPS. Ability to operate 4WD vehicles, swamp buggies and ATV’s in remote areas and through difficult terrain. Ability to carry large backpacks weighing up to 60 lbs. through rough terrain and vegetation for a mile or more. Ability to apply knowledge and skills of panther and wildlife sign detection and interpretation techniques in the investigation of human-panther interactions or suspected panther depredations. Ability to communicate empathetically with constituents when dealing with depredations. Ability to use computer word-processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and geographic information system software packages. Exhibit effective verbal and written skills. Ability to prepare scientific reports, agency reports, white papers and popular articles.
