Join
FWC Biologist Brad Kolhoff at the FWC Royce Unit for bird viewing in oak
hammock and wetland areas … you’ll want to bring your binoculars and camera!
Some
walking required. Please bring a hiker's water bottle or similar (we'll have
plenty of cold drinking water).
We'll be
preparing an area along a CSX rail line for restoration and
planting. Four inches of fill dirt and silt fencing needs to be
removed from a section of Scrub habitat and then covered with an open-weave
biodegradable jute stabilizer to prevent erosion of the sloped area.
Strong backs most appreciated for this workday!
This
event will be led by Juliet Rynear of Bok Tower Gardens. Meet at BTG's
greenhouse at 8:15 AM and from there the team will carpool to the
work area.
This workday is part of Project Acorn, a multiyear
effort by the Ridge Rangers to gather and pot scrub-oak acorns, maintain the
sprouts, and plant the resulting baby oaks in damaged scrub oak habitat to help
endangered species on the Lake Wales Ridge
DEP Upper Peace River Conservation Area, near Bartow, FL
We'll
be removing invasive Chinese Tallow Trees from along the Peace River in
the 280 acre Upper Peace River Conservation Area (we won't be working in
water). Eliminating chinese tallow trees
reduces harmful invasive plants that out-compete with native floodplain forest
species.
We'll be working in teams, using hand saws, sawsalls, and chainsaws (for
qualified persons) to cut down or girdle the trees.
Wishing everyone
a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Many new events are on the Ridge Rangers
