GTM RESEARCH RESERVE MARINELAND OFFERS LECTURE, "PRICE CHECK ON AISLE NATURE"
~Attend a free lecture to learn more about combining math, money and
marine science~
PONTE VEDRA BEACH – The GTM Research
Reserve invites the public to a free lecture, "Price Check on Aisle
Nature," on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 10-11 a.m. at the Marineland Field
Office.
"Changes in ecosystem services can affect the economy and
society," said Michael Shirley, director of the GTM Research
Reserve. "This month's lecture will provide some amazing facts combining
math, money, marine science, the diminishing value of ecosystem services
and what we can do about it."
Ecosystem services are the contributions from marine and coastal ecosystems
that support, sustain and enrich human life. Kenneth Rainer, education coordinator at the
GTM Research Reserve will present, "Price Check on Aisle Nature"
focusing on ecosystem service valuation.
Rainer earned his bachelor's in biology from Texas A&M University,
Galveston, and a master's in biology from Texas A&M University, Corpus
Christi. His previous research focused on marine population genetics, along
with serving as education specialist for the Harte Research Institute for Gulf
of Mexico Studies. He has since integrated his background in research science
with his interest and practical experience in environmental education.
The program is one of an ongoing third-Tuesday-of-the-month lecture series
designed to help inform the public about their coastal natural world. These
events are free, so space is limited and reservations are requested.
Reservations can be made online here or
call 904-823-4500 for more information.
