LAKE KISSMMEE AND ALLEN DAVID BROUSSARD CATFISH CREEK STATE PARKS TO HOST PUBLIC MEETING

~The public is invited to share input on the land management plans ~

STUART - Join the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Park Service for a public meeting and presentation of the update to the management plan for two state parks, Lake Kissimmee State Park and Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve State Park at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at the Lake Wales High School Auditorium. The presentation will propose updates to the management plans.

For Lake Kissimmee State Parks, proposed updates will include:

  • Continued monitoring of imperiled plant and animal species in the park, including Florida scrub jays and gopher tortoise.
  • Ongoing work to restore and improve the park’s natural communities and control exotic and invasive plants and animals.
  • Expanded overnight opportunities in the park, including family camping, equestrian camping and additional primitive camping sites for paddlers along the Kissimmee Blueway Trail.
  • New wildlife viewing opportunities with the addition of a scenic overlook on a proposed freshwater marsh restoration area.
  • Enhanced boating access with dock additions in the Lake Kissimmee Marina.

For Allen David Broussard Catfish Creek Preserve State Park, proposed updates will include:

  • Continued monitoring of imperiled plant and animal species in the park, including Florida scrub Jay and sand skink.
  • Ongoing work to restore and improve the park’s natural communities and control exotic and invasive plants and animals.
  • Assessment, documentation and preservation of the park’s cultural resources.
  • Addition of a day use area on Lake Pierce featuring a picnic shelter, restroom and canoe/kayak launch.
  • Expanded trailhead facilities on the Western Tract, including a new picnic pavilion, a small restroom, more trails and the addition of primitive camping sites.
  • Addition of shared-use trail system and equestrian camping area in the Rolling Meadows Tract.
