State wildlife officials adopted two water quality improvements projects Wednesday that will put $18 million toward restoration projects in Lee County.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection touted its latest water quality plan as one that will clean up Caloosahatchee River waters over the next 15 years
About 148,000 pounds of nitrogen circulate through the Caloosahatchee River watershed basin. The action stems from a lawsuit filed by groups such as the Conservancy of Southwest Florida against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for failure to implement the Clean Water Act. EPA officials have since passed the burden to the state, or DEP.

Florida's top environmental official stood at a marina basin Wednesday along the Caloosahatchee River to declare that work to clean up the river is moving from talk to action.
"We're going to see tangible results," Herschel Vinyard, Department of Environmental Protection secretary, told a crowd of stakeholders that included local elected officials, water managers, environmental advocates and farmers in downtown Fort Myers. "These are real projects. We're going to start putting money in the ground."The cause for the ceremonial celebration was the adoption of cleanup plans, called Basin Management Action Plans for the Caloosahatchee and two of its tributaries, Hendry Creek and the Imperial River.

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- State and local officials are kicking off a series of projects to restore water quality on the Caloosahatchee river. Some are already in the works, or are already completed, like Downtown river basin.
Wednesday morning, state and local leaders joined to celebrate finalizing a single master plan of bettering water quality for the Caloosahatchee estuary. The river basin project is a good example of what many of the projects are about: capturing stormwater and treating it before releasing it into the river.

It's a 15-year plan to invest in storm water management and water control projects throughout Lee County.
