DEP South District Presents Environmental Stewardship Award to the Southwest Florida Foundation
~Award presented in recognition of commitment to environmental protection~
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s South District recognized the Southwest Florida Community Foundation (SFCF) for their outstanding achievement in transforming the historical Atlantic Coast Railway station site into an environmentally sustainable building, which is once again a hub of community activities.
Founded in 1976, SFCF addresses the evolving community needs in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties. Using an integrated approach to the design and maintenance of water, stormwater and wastewater systems, SFCF protects our natural systems through the reduction of pollution and energy consumption.
“The department’s partnership with the foundation is an exciting opportunity to join forces to help the community better understand that our water and natural resources are the foundation of Florida’s communities, economy and way of life, and that we must work together to restore and protect the environment,” said Jon Iglehart, director of DEP’s South District.
In the last 10 months, the department has hosted 10 environmental workshops at the foundation. The partnership has provided environmental education for 450 professionals and the public with a focus on the department’s mission of Protecting Florida Together.
The South District initiated an Environmental Stewardship Recognition Program to recognize corporate and nonprofit partners and other stakeholders who go above and beyond regulatory requirements to protect Florida's natural resources.
