Tarkiln Bayou Preserve, Big Lagoon and Perdido Key State Parks to Host Public Meeting

DEP's Florida Park Service is in the process of updating the unit management plan for Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park, Big Lagoon State Park and Perdido Key State Park. Citizens are invited to attend the public meeting to learn more and to provide their comments about the proposed plans for the state parks.

The public notice, agenda and draft plan are available online. Copies also may be obtained by emailing Kiersten.L.Wilson@floridadep.gov or calling 850-492-1595. There will be a brief presentation at 6 p.m. Following the presentation, staff will be available for the duration of the meeting to answer questions and accept public comments. Additionally, the public is invited to review and submit comments to the Division of Recreation and Parks at FLStateParkPlanning@Floridadep.gov until July 6, 2018.

Potential developments and improvements to park facilities that could occur over the next 10 years include:

 Tarklin Bayou Preserve State Park

  • Expand parking area and add support facilities to aid with resource management.
  • Develop primitive tent-only campsites and establish primitive group camping area.
  • Expand hiking and biking trail network.

Big Lagoon State Park

  • Redesign boat ramp area to add second boat launch, expand parking and improve traffic circulation. Develop living shoreline to help mitigate shoreline erosion.
  • Upgrade RV campsites and improve traffic circulation.
  • Renovate support facilities such as shop building and staff residences and develop additional park management facilities.
  • Re-engineer park entrance road to alleviate flooding issues.

Perdido Key State Park

  • Replace restrooms, renovate boardwalks and add bike racks at both beach use areas.
  • Construct observation/fishing platform on north side of park along the Old River. Add paddling launch.
