MYAKKA RIVER STATE PARK TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING

DEP's Florida Park Service is in the process
of updating the Unit Management Plan for Myakka River State Park. Citizens are
invited to attend a public hearing to learn more about the proposed plans for
the state park and to provide their comments.
The public notice,
agenda and draft
plan are available online. Copies may also be obtained by emailing Stephen.Giguere@dep.state.fl.us or calling 941-361-6511. There will be a brief presentation at 5:30 p.m., but staff will be available for the duration of the hearing to answer questions and accept public comment. Additionally, the public is invited to review and submit comments to the Division of
Recreation and Parks at FL_StateParkPlanning@dep.state.fl.us until March 16,
2017.
The
following improvements are proposed for the updated Myakka River State Park management plan:
- Continue projects to restore and maintain natural communities within the park;

Develop and implement plans to restore a portion of the park south of State Road 72;

Develop and implement an Interpretive Master Plan and new interpretive programs to explain the historical influence and unique features within the Myakka region;
- Improve and/or repair existing facilities, as well as 8 miles of roadways within the park; and
- Convert the former youth camp area into a lodging and conference center.
