TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recognized Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. for its outstanding recycling efforts in 2015, recycling over 97 percent of its solid waste during three large-scale construction projects. DEP Secretary Jon Steverson presented the awards at the Florida Capitol during the Florida Recycles Day celebration.

"The department is proud to join the Florida Recycling Partnership to recognize the importance of recycling and celebrate the many organizations and industries that are helping Florida achieve our recycling goal," said Secretary Jon Steverson. "We’re also honored to present Recycling Recognition Awards to Skanska USA to celebrate their commitment to increasing recycling, decreasing waste and protecting Florida’s environment."

Skanska USA, one of the largest construction and development companies in the U.S., has executed several sustainable initiatives to help reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, the company maintains an internal policy to recycle or reuse 95 percent of all waste collected from their offices and construction sites. Skanska attained a 99-percent recycling rate for the
I-275 reconstruction project in Tampa and a 97-percent recycling rate for the Choctawhatchee Bay Bridge Project by reusing concrete as road bed or back fill, recycling all asphalt and metals from demolition work, and reusing wastewater for dust suppression on-site. Skanska Granite Lane, a construction partnership, also received a 99-percent recycling rate for the I-4 reconstruction in Orlando.

“Skanska’s commitment to the environment by being a leader in the industry and going above and beyond environmentally on all our projects and facilities is not only a benefit to the environment, it is a benefit to our community and business," said Senior Vice President of Operations/General Manager Civil Southeast Bob Rose. "Our goal is to leave the environment related to our completed projects in better standing than when we break ground."

To help businesses increase recycling efficiency, the department has an easy tool to track recycling – the Florida DEP Business Recycling Tracking Tool. Through the website, companies can track various types of recycling and produce reports on how their efforts are helping to shrink their carbon footprint. The tracking tool helps the department identify companies that are making an effort to go green.
