THREE STATE PARKS TO HOST PUBLIC HEARING

DEP's Florida Park Service is in
the process of updating the Unit Management Plans for Long Key, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda state parks. Citizens are invited to attend a public hearing to learn more about the
proposed plans for the state parks and to provide their comments.
Please review the public notice, agenda and draft plans. Copies
may also be obtained by emailing Kenneth.Troisi@dep.state.fl.us or calling 305-289-2690. In addition to providing input at the public hearing, the public is
invited to review and submit comments to the Division of Recreation and Parks
at FL_StateParkPlanning@dep.state.fl.us until
June 24, 2016.
The
following improvements are proposed in the updated Long Key
State Park management plan:
- Construct additional picnic pavilions in the Atlantic day-use area;

Improve campground
landscape;
-
Add a rest stop for the Florida Keys
Overseas Heritage Trail at the entrance area;

Elevate the park's repair shop;
-
Construct a three-bay
pole barn for parking and vehicle storage; and
- Create additional
residences for park staff.
The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:
- The
paddling trail in the internal seagrass bed has been removed due to an increase
in sediment levels that make it impassable at times.

The
proposed eastward extension of the golden orb trail has been removed due to
potential negative impacts to imperiled species.
The
following improvements are proposed in the updated Curry
Hammock State Park management plan:
- Expand the deck at the restroom facilities;
- Create a fixed dock in the residence area on Little Crawl Key; and
- Add a residence area for park staff at mile marker 59.5 off Dorsett Drive.
The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:
- Support area across from the main park entrance on Burnt Point Road due to lack of
developable land.
The
following improvements are proposed in the updated Bahia Honda
State Park management plan:
- Add two duplex cabins for overnight accommodations;

Add
a floating dock in the cabin area with 10 slips;

Improve
fishing access under the bridge overlook;

Add
two small picnic pavilions at the Calusa Beach day-use area;
-
Add
accessible canoe/kayak launch in the concession area; and
-
Retrofit
a storage facility into a special-events pavilion in the Loggerhead
Beach day-use area.
The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:
- Horseshoe Borrow Pit day-use area due to limited developable land.
