DEP's Florida Park Service is in the process of updating the Unit Management Plans for Long Key, Curry Hammock and Bahia Honda state parks. Citizens are invited to attend a public hearing to learn more about the proposed plans for the state parks and to provide their comments.

Please review the public notice, agenda and draft plans. Copies may also be obtained by emailing Kenneth.Troisi@dep.state.fl.us or calling 305-289-2690. In addition to providing input at the public hearing, the public is invited to review and submit comments to the Division of Recreation and Parks at FL_StateParkPlanning@dep.state.fl.us until June 24, 2016.

The following improvements are proposed in the updated Long Key State Park management plan:

  • Construct additional picnic pavilions in the Atlantic day-use area;
  • Improve campground landscape;
  • Add a rest stop for the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail at the entrance area;
  • Elevate the park's repair shop;
  • Construct a three-bay pole barn for parking and vehicle storage; and
  • Create additional residences for park staff.

The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:

  • The paddling trail in the internal seagrass bed has been removed due to an increase in sediment levels that make it impassable at times.
  • The proposed eastward extension of the golden orb trail has been removed due to potential negative impacts to imperiled species.

The following improvements are proposed in the updated Curry Hammock State Park management plan:

  • Expand the deck at the restroom facilities;
  • Create a fixed dock in the residence area on Little Crawl Key; and
  • Add a residence area for park staff at mile marker 59.5 off Dorsett Drive.

The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:

  • Support area across from the main park entrance on Burnt Point Road due to lack of developable land.

The following improvements are proposed in the updated Bahia Honda State Park management plan:

  • Add two duplex cabins for overnight accommodations;
  • Add a floating dock in the cabin area with 10 slips;
  • Improve fishing access under the bridge overlook;
  • Add two small picnic pavilions at the Calusa Beach day-use area;
  • Add accessible canoe/kayak launch in the concession area; and
  • Retrofit a storage facility into a special-events pavilion in the Loggerhead Beach day-use area.

The following developments were included in the current, approved management plan, but have been removed in the plan update:

  • Horseshoe Borrow Pit day-use area due to limited developable land.
