MILTON, FLA. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Northwest District, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the West Florida and Apalachee Regional Planning Councils invite local governments, investors, developers and other interested parties to learn about Florida’s Brownfields Redevelopment Program.

This year's event will include interactive discussion of brownfields assessment and cleanup, local success stories, updates to Florida laws governing brownfields sites and economic incentives of brownfields redevelopment.

Florida’s Brownfields Program facilitates redevelopment and job creation by empowering communities, local governments and other stakeholders to work together to assess, clean up and reuse properties previously impacted by pollutants. To make the program's incentives available to a community, a local government must designate a brownfields area by resolution.

Utilizing economic and regulatory incentives, the program encourages the use of private revenue to restore and redevelop sites, create new jobs and boost the local economy. One example of a successful local project can be found along Main Street on the Pensacola Bay waterfront in an area that was historically filled in for cargo docks. After revitalization, the property is now occupied by Baskerville-Donovan, Inc. and Nick’s Boathouse Restaurant. The combined value of the property is now over $3.2 million compared to the predevelopment value of $463,000.
