ROOKERY BAY HOSTS NATURE FESTIVAL ACTIVITIES

The 12th Annual Southwest Florida Nature Festival will feature almost 40 guided field trips to 20 wildlife hot spots around Southwest Florida and lectures at the Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center.

The Rookery Bay Environmental Learning Center will host on-site activities and lectures Jan.16, such as a marine life touch tank, guided trail walks and educational booths. Hourly lectures by local and national experts will cover local wildlife, including a session on how to become a better birdwatcher. Admission to the Environmental Learning Center on Saturday is $10 for the public and $5 for Friends of Rookery Bay members.

The keynote presentation, “Florida’s Living Beaches” by Blair and Dawn Witherington, will be held from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Their presentation will cover beach processes, plants, animals, minerals and manmade objects, as well as highlight how scenic beaches foster unique life forms. The cost to attend the keynote presentation is $15 and includes light refreshments.

This year’s Southwest Florida Nature Festival includes three days of field trips with a variety of transportation modes such as walking, driving, biking, paddling and boat tours. New this year are an evening firefly walk in Big Cypress National Preserve, a behind-the-scenes private tour at Naples Botanical Garden and a birding walk at Harnes Marsh Preserve. Each tour has limited space and registration is required.
