DEP LAUNCHES NEW "WISH YOU WERE HERE" TRAVEL PLANNING
INITIATIVE
~Initiative highlights six state parks that are former roadside attractions~

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Join the The Florida Department of Environmental
Protection’s Florida Park Service this fall at six
state parks with a new road trip travel initiative
called “Wish You
Were Here.”
Plan your adventure using a self-guided
itinerary to explore these premier state parks that were once roadside attractions. Document your road trip by having the “Wish You Were Here” passport stamped at each park’s Ranger Station.

Meet Liz Dane, a skier with Queenie the Elephant at the park during the 1950s. Enjoy a guided
history walk with the park manager, and
the opportunity to share your memories and photos of De Leon Springs. Events are included in the
park entry of $6 per vehicle, up to eight people. Boat tour of the park is an additional $14 per person.

Join
us on Veterans Day to view artifacts and memorabilia from Camp Gordon Johnston
in the lobby of the Lodge at Wakulla Springs. The event, entitled “Life at
Wakulla in WWII,” will feature a historic film of troop-training maneuvers
conducted at Wakulla Springs in the early 1940s. Park and museum staff will be
on site to discuss their shared history of training maneuvers and recreation.
Admission is free in all state parks on Veterans Day.

Following
a boat ride from the Visitors Center on Pepper Creek, visitors will tour the
park and “Fish Bowl,” and catch the Wildlife Encounters Program and a Manatee
Program. Between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., visitors will meet at the Visitor Center,
where they can learn about the interesting history of
Homosassa Springs. Boat ride, tour and event programs are included in park admission of $13 per person.

Enjoy stories from former mermaids before an underwater performance. Visitors will also enjoy a
boat tour of the Weeki Wachee River. Mermaid show and boat tour are included in park admission of $13 per person.

The second
day of the Real Florida Festival features stories of Silver Springs, music,
food trucks and a book presentation by author Cynthia Graham, entitled "Paradise
Park Remembered." Park entry is $8 per vehicle, up to eight people.
