TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott and the Cabinet members authorized the
sale of the former Indian River Correctional Institute in Indian River County for
$850,000 to Algae to Omega LLC. The property’s new owner intends to cultivate
and market algae-derived products for nutraceutical, functional foods and
personal care applications.
“The department is pleased that the sale of this surplus
property will create approximately 30 jobs and give a welcomed boost to the
Indian River County economy,” said DEP Secretary Jon Steverson.
The property is approximately 99 acres of surplus land, which
includes 34 buildings totaling approximately 139,000 square feet. The facility
closed in 2012, as part of the Florida Department of Corrections’ statewide
consolidation plan.
