Florida State Watch Office Morning Situation Report

EOC Activation Level: Level 2
Meteorological Summary:
  • Areas of patchy fog have developed this morning across much of the Panhandle and Big Bend but will gradually dissipate and lift after sunrise.
  • The typical summertime thunderstorm pattern can be expected to develop this afternoon and evening from the Big Bend and I-75 corridor and throughout the Peninsula (50-80% chance of rain).
  • Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms can be expected along the sea breeze, and with the help of a weak front stalling north of the state line.
  • A few strong thunderstorms capable of producing frequent lightning, gusty winds (40-50 mph) and heavy downpours will be possible.
  • Hot and humid conditions can be expected nearly statewide, with dangerous heat and humidity throughout North Florida and the northern Peninsula due to high temperatures in the upper 90s and heat index values well into triple digits (105-112).
  • Heat Advisories will go into effect across North Florida and northern portions of the Peninsula by midday as heat index values upwards of 112 are expected this afternoon.
  • High temperatures in the upper 80s to middle 90s can be expected south of the I-4 corridor, with heat index values in the upper 90s and low 100s.
  • Most of the shower and thunderstorm activity will dissipate and move offshore overnight; however, lingering showers and thunderstorms will remain just offshore and along the coastline for portions of Nature Coast and the western Peninsula overnight (30-40% chance of rain).
  • A moderate to high risk for rip currents continues along Panhandle and several East Coast beaches due to onshore winds and lingering ocean swells.
  • A tropical wave over the southeastern Caribbean Sea is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Conditions appear to be conducive for slow development once the wave reaches the western Caribbean late this week. There is a low chance (20%) for development over the next 7 days. This system poses no direct threat to Florida.
