State of Florida Provides Updates on Federally-Supported Vaccination Sites

State of Florida Provides Updates on Federally-Supported Vaccination Sites

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Beginning today Monday, March 29, each of the four federally-supported vaccine sites in Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, and Miami will be able to administer 3,000 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine per day. To make this change, Governor DeSantis directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida Department of Health to allocate state vaccine allocations to these federal sites.

Additionally, the four federally-supported sites will remain open for four additional weeks. These sites were previously expected to close on April 28 and will now close on May 26. To keep these sites open, the sites will utilize state vaccine allocations.

The four federally-supported sites are listed below:

  • Tampa Greyhound Track
    755 E. Waters Ave.
    Tampa, FL 33604

  • Valencia College – West Campus
    1800 S. Kirkman Road
    Orlando, FL 32811

  • Gateway Mall
    5200 Norwood Ave.
    Jacksonville, FL 32208

  • Miami Dade Community College – North Campus
    11380 NW 27th
    Miami, FL 33167

These large, federally-supported sites are a critical part of the state’s efforts to expand vaccine access as more Floridians become eligible for the vaccine. Each of these sites was opened in order to provide the vaccine in underserved communities, and Florida was the first state in the nation to open large federal sites using a walk-up model and was the first state to use a hub and spoke model to reach more underserved areas. To date, these sites have vaccinated more than 300,000 individuals.

Originally, the federally-supported vaccination sites were designed to remain in their communities for eight weeks, and in order to ensure all individuals who visited the site were able to receive second doses prior to the sites ceasing operations, the federally-supported sites were planning to only offer second dose shots March 24 – April 14. Since March 24, the state has been re-allocating unused federal vaccine to the sites to provide up to 500 additional first shots per day.

Floridians are encouraged to also visit state-supported vaccination sites to receive a vaccine. State-supported sites can vaccinate all eligible individuals under Governor DeSantis’ current Executive Order, including those deemed medically vulnerable.
