Every Drop Has Another Purpose: Celebrating Florida Water Reuse Week
Florida Water Reuse Week is May 17 to 23, and the city of Clearwater is encouraging residents to learn more about the role reclaimed water plays in protecting Florida’s future water supply.
Florida currently reuses nearly 900 million gallons of reclaimed water each day, helping conserve freshwater resources and support environmental sustainability. As the state continues to grow, water reuse and conservation remain critical for protecting our communities and natural resources, especially in this season of drought that Clearwater (and Florida) is experiencing.
Residents can participate by conserving water at home, following watering schedules and learning how reclaimed water supports a more sustainable future for Florida.

Don’t Trash That Can: Aerosol Recycling Made Easy
Did you know many empty aerosol cans can be recycled? Items such as spray paint, sunscreen, cooking spray, shaving cream and hairspray containers are often made of recyclable steel or aluminum.
Before placing aerosol cans in your recycling bin, make sure they are completely empty. Empty cans can go in your curbside recycling container, but partially full cans should be thrown in the trash.
To safely recycle aerosol cans:
- Use the product completely before disposal.
- Do not puncture or crush the can.
- Keep the cap on if possible.
- Place empty cans loosely in your recycling bin.

Community Partnership Supports Clearwater’s Coastal Resilience
A creative community partnership is helping strengthen Clearwater’s coastline through the installation of hanging oyster gardens at city-owned docks.
Seasoned Clearwater volunteer Jack introduced the idea as a way to help improve water quality, support marine life and increase storm resilience. Working alongside Volunteer Specialist Kelsy Johnson, Sustainability Specialist Melody Yin, Public Works Engineering Specialist Sam Reilly, and Tampa Bay Watch, the first oyster garden was installed at the Turner Street Fishing Dock.
The team hopes to expand the project at Turner Street and eventually bring additional oyster gardens to the Magnolia Street Fishing Dock using paddleboards and kayaks. The initiative is expected to be the first of many coastal resilience and environmental education efforts planned for Clearwater.
Sea turtle nesting season began May 1, and continues until Oct. 31. This is a vital time for hatchlings as they make their journey to the ocean, starting their new lives.
All seven species of sea turtles are endangered or threatened, with the loggerhead being the most common species found in Pinellas County. Hatchlings emerge from a nest in the sand using the moonlight to guide them to the sea. Only one in 1,000 hatchlings reaches adulthood, making it crucial to give them the best possible chance of reaching the ocean.
Tips for helping sea turtles this season include:
- If you see a turtle or hatchling, do not interact with it.
- Do not touch or disturb a nest.
- Pick up your trash, especially plastic bags that may be mistaken for food.
- Fill in any holes dug during your stay at the beach.
- Knock down sandcastles at the end of the day.
- Keep flashlights and cellphone lights off at night.
- Beach residents and businesses should switch outdoor lighting to sea turtle-friendly options.
- Use protective window treatments on doors and windows to minimize interior light reaching the beach.
- If you see an injured turtle, call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Alert Hotline at (888) 404-3922.
- Report distressed turtles to The Clearwater Marine Aquarium at (727) 441-1790, ext. 1.
