COUNCILMEMBER ROBERT WHITE STATEMENT ON DOORDASH WITHDRAWING SUPPORT FOR H.R. 9720

DoorDash reverses support for the DC Taxing Authority Review Act, which threatens District control over local finances

WASHINGTON, D.C. — “I called DoorDash out publicly, pressed them privately, and refused to back down when they tried to use Congress to override DC. Today, they reversed course. DC residents made clear that we will not let powerful companies use our lack of representation against us.

When DoorDash backed H.R. 9720 and asked Congress to stomp on DC’s ability to govern itself, I called on the company to withdraw its support and held that position through weeks of conversations, even when I was urged to accept less. DoorDash is now withdrawing its support for the anti-DC bill and increasing its investment in DC programs.

That reversal did not happen in a vacuum. DC residents, advocates, and elected leaders made clear that exploiting our lack of representation to overturn a local policy was unacceptable. I made clear to DoorDash that withdrawing its support was the starting point for repairing its relationship with our city. They heard that pressure and changed course.

Let this be a warning to any company considering the same playbook. If you disagree with DC policy, bring your case to residents, the Council, and the Mayor. Do not run to Congress and use our lack of democracy against us. I will fight it every time, and DC residents will not tolerate it.

DoorDash still has work to do to rebuild trust here. I want to recognize this progress today just as I called out their actions when they were wrong. I will work with any person or organization that wants to do right by DC.”
