older adults, persons living with disabilities, service providers, community
stakeholders and family caregivers. Our theme is “Career-to-Golden Years:
Promoting Longevity and Independence for Seniors”.

D.C. Office on Aging
was nominated by the U.S. Attorney Office for the District of Columbia to
receive an award during “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,” in recognition
of the work of the Elder Abuse Prevention Committee to identify and prevent
elder abuse in the District of Columbia. The staff are deeply humbled and
honored to receive this award, which is due to the extraordinary efforts of all
of the members of the Elder Abuse Prevention Committee.

appreciates the
commitment of the committee to this
important issue and recognize that their contributions
to the achievements of the Elder Abuse Prevention Committee are made, in
addition to the regular duties of their
professionally demanding roles in their
respective organizations. We also thank Maria Shumar, whose effective

Committee’s efforts.

corner of 13th St NW and either L St NW or Massachusetts Ave. NW. Below you

All prospective students
must come to the pre-test and registration dates in order to be
considered for the class. All prospective students must submit an up to
date Police Clearance at the time they take the pre-test.

REGARDING ACCEPTANCE TO CLASS WILL BE MAILED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE
PRE-TEST.
NOTE: TO BE ELIGIBLE TO
TAKE THE BOARD OF NURSING EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST COMPLETE ALL 125 HOURS OF
TRAINING. ANY MISSED DAY(S) MUST BE MADE UP IN ANOTHER CLASS BEFORE
STUDENT CAN SIT FOR THE EXAM.

students registered for each class or the class will be cancelled.
Older Americans are living longer than ever. We need to give them more ways to contribute to society, not fewer.
Some months back, I dipped into a small bookshop to pick up a volume on career transitions for people older than 50. I was stunned to find it on a shelf with the heading “Aging and Death.”
The memory has stayed with me, a metaphor for our fundamental misapprehension of where aging fits into the human experience. And it’s far from the only example. Recently, I came across a social work graduate program with a concentration in “Older Adult/End of Life Care,” a formulation that would seem to posit death as the singular focus of the years after middle age. It’s a perspective neatly encapsulated in this line from a Forbes piece: “It won’t be too long before baby boomers begin migrating from factory floors and corner offices to wheelchairs and adult diapers.”
