Mayor
Vincent C. Gray, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and representatives of
the family of Marion S. Barry, Jr. released the details of memorial event
for the late Ward 8 Councilmember and former Mayor of the District of Columbia.
“From his days as a leader on the
front lines of the civil rights movement to his work to fight poverty and
advance Home Rule for the District, Marion Barry leaves behind an incredible
legacy,” said
Mayor Gray. “It is fitting that we come together as a city to celebrate
this legacy and allow the entire District to say goodbye to the ‘Mayor for
Life.’”

where his remains will lie in repose for 24 hours.

The Mayor's Annual
Senior Holiday Celebration will be held on Wednesday, December 10th, from 10
a.m. - 2 p.m. at the D.C. Armory, located 2001 East Capitol Street, SE for
District residents age 60 and older.
The celebration, with more than 3,500 residents expected to attend, is the
largest occasion to celebrate our city’s older adult population. Hosted by the
D.C. Office on Aging, the event will feature live entertainment, musical
guests, wellness demonstrations, free facials, manicures and massages, and
informational exhibits featuring community and government resources, along with
a festive lunch.

World AIDS Day is an annual event held December 1st and is an opportunity for
people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support
for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a growing number of individuals aged 50 and older in the United States that are
living with the HIV infection. Persons aged 55 and older account for almost
one-fifth (19%, 217,000) of the estimated 1.1
million people living with HIV infection in the United States in 2010.
