DCOA Executive Director John M. Thompson, Ph.D. was a guest on The Senior Zone, WYCB 1340 AM this morning where he delivered his quarterly #stateofthesenioraddress for seniors in the District of Columbia. Dr. Thompson discussed the need to end senior hunger in the District through our partnership with the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, (read full story here), discussed the launch of "Club Memory", a stigma-free social club for people with early-stage Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment or other forms of dementia, motivated seniors to spread the word about the meal services that DCOA offers, and ends his segment by encouraging all seniors to take advantage of the new senior wellness center hours.

Last week, a group of volunteers from the Bernice
Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center received thanks from the ALS
Association.
President and CEO Barbara Newhouse offered gratitude to the volunteers from the
Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center in Washington, D.C. The
volunteers received thanks - and certificates of appreciation - for donating
their time and energy to help open and sort mail received from the #ALS Ice
Bucket Challenge.

The D.C. Office on Aging (DCOA) Ambassador
Program is a FREE, interactive, member-based program designed to reach out to
older adults and their caregivers to help them learn about the services and
resources available to them through DCOA. If you are interested in expanding
your network and educating older adults about the services and resources
available to them, join us for our next Ambassador Training Workshop to learn
about all of the programs and services that DCOA offers to the community and
how you can become an ambassador. All workshops include an overview of Office
on Aging programs and services, information on how to access resources, and
guidance on your role as an advocate.

Christian Tomasco, Social Work Supervisor Aging and Disability Resource Center
Christian
comes to the DCOA with more than 4 years of experience as a social worker in
the District. Prior to DCOA, Christian was a social worker in both the acute
and long-term care settings, responsible for discharge planning, case
management, and other social services at both George Washington University
Hospital and Carroll Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at Providence
Hospital. He was also a school social worker at YouthBuild Public Charter
School in Columbia Heights. Christian brings both clinical social work
experience and a social policy focus to the DCOA. He looks forward to advancing
the DCOA’s mission of providing critical services and resources to the senior
and disabled populations in the District.
