Fighting to Honor a Father's
Last Wish: To Die at Home New York Times |
September 25, 2014
"Now she was determined
to fulfill her father's dearest wish, the wish so common among frail,
elderly people: to die at home. But it seemed as if all the forces of
the health care system were against her - hospitals, nursing homes, home
health agencies, insurance companies, and the shifting crosscurrents of
public health care spending."
Becoming A Family
Caregiver: A Search for Identity Carol Levine - The
Jewish Week | September 24, 2014
"Becoming a family
caregiver can mean a gradual assumption of responsibilities, punctuated by
episodes of acute illness, falls, lapses in judgment or other warning
signs. Or it can be, as in my case, a catastrophic event that changes
everything from Day One."
Why Elder Care in America
Isn't Working Next
Avenue (PBS) | September 24, 2014
"America's
elder care system is not a caring system. It is driven by caution instead
of imagination. Safety is an overvalued commodity. As a result of risk
aversion, older people are deprived of many activities and subjected to
unnecessary suffering."
Down Syndrome and
Alzheimer's: A Double Burden Chicago
Tribune | September 25, 2014
"Now, however,
his sweet smile is topped by short gray hair. He can't eat or dress by
himself. He no longer works; he was forgetting how to bag groceries. He no
longer knows how to tie his shoes."
Is Alzheimer's Brain
Diabetes? OZY | September
26, 2014
"Here's some
food for thought: those Fritos, fries and frosted doughnuts aren't just
stuffing your waistline - they might be starving your brain cells. So say a
growing number of scientists, who believe that a poor diet can trigger not
only obesity and diabetes, but Alzheimer's disease, too."
