Since May 1, 2014, DC DMV has been issuing driver licenses and identification cards that comply with the Federal REAL ID security standards. DC residents who need to convert, renew, or obtain a duplicate credential are required to make an in-person visit, enabling DC DMV to revalidate their source documents. Customers are now required to provide one document to show Proof of Identity, one document to show Proof of Social Security number, and two documents to show Proof of DC Residency. Acceptable documents are listed online.
Additionally, your current driver license or identification card is valid until its expiration date. If you decide to obtain a new credential prior to the expiration date, you'll need the source documents mentioned above, and the appropriate fees will apply.
Appointments to obtain a Limited Purpose driver
license or identification card are now available. Before you schedule an appointment online, follow DC DMV's step-by-step process to ensure you are prepared for your appointment.
All DC DMV locations will be closed on Saturday, May 24 and Monday, May 26, 2014 in observance of Memorial Day. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, May 27.
