February marks American Heart Month – a month to raise awareness about heart health and cardiovascular disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans.
During his recent town hall,
at the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center, DCOA Executive Director John
M. Thompson, Ph.D. stressed how important it is for seniors to stay healthy.
The town hall style meeting also allowed seniors, in Ward 1, to weigh in on
issues that directly impact them.

Seniors from the YMCA Golden Agers received information about DCOA funded program and services during a recent presentation on Smart911. DCOA has partnered with the Office of Unified Communications to register seniors for the web based safety profile that provides first responders with important information to assist them when callers dial 9-1-1.

Caregivers are encouraged to participate in the D.C. Caregivers Online
Chat at Noon to be held, Tuesday, February 18 at 12 p.m. The next chat will discuss Insomnia: The
Caregiver's Role.

bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 12 p.m. to get help with your caregiving

Holy Temple Church of Christ hosted a Community Health and Wellness Fair presented by DCOA for seniors in the community.
Representatives from the D.C. Board of Ethics and Elections, Justice Department--Senior Abuse and Elder Exploitation, Legal Counsel for the Elderly, Serve DC and Seabury Resources for Aging, Ward 6 joined DCOA with information on programs and services.

The Committee on Health, chaired by
Councilmember Yvette Alexander, will convene the Committee on Health FY ’14
Performance Oversight Hearing for the D.C. Office on Aging on Tuesday,
February 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. The hearing will take place in Room 500
of the John A. Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.

Are you among the elderly who face challenges living on a
fixed income? As part of highlighting such challenges, the Senate Special
Committee on Aging is holding a hearing on senior poverty and is looking for a
witness. The committee wants a witness who can share his or her struggles
to pay for necessities like food, medicine, medical care, rent, and utilities,
and still pay other bills on a limited income. Would you be willing to
testify in front of senators, an audience, photographers, and cameras?
The hearing will occur in the afternoon on February 26 on Capitol Hill.
